The ’80s and the ’90s were not the best of times for The Citizens, as hardship came and the club spent years shuffling between the first and second divisions. United, meanwhile, went on to achieve great success, especially since the establishment of the Premier League in 1992. It all changed in 2008. That year, City was taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group, which has since invested large sums of money on bringing in players and managers, developing the stadium and a top-ranked youth academy. In 2003, after playing for 80 years in the 35,150 seat Main Road, City moved into the new 48,000 seats (later expanded to 55,000 seats) City of Manchester Stadium and plans are underway to expand capacity to 61,000 seats. In 2010, the club reached an agreement with city council to purchase the naming rights for the stadium and renamed it Etihad Stadium. The first trophy under the Abu Dhabi reign came in 2011 when the club won The FA Cup, the first silverware since 1976. The following year, City won the Premier League title on goal difference, edging past city rivals Manchester United on the last match of the season. That came thanks to a 94th-minute goal by Sergio Aguero against Queens Park Rangers. The first league title in 44 years entitled City to qualify to the Champions League. Since then, the club have become a regular Premier Legue title contender, as well as a participating member in the Champions League, although that trophy has yet to arrive in the blue side of Manchester.
